This raft of whale researchers were the ones being watched as a Humpback whale
"spyhops" or raises its eye to water level to get a better view. Only a few research
permits are granted each year and most of them are based on Maui, home to the
Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, one of 13 sanctuaries in U.S. waters.
